Developing Clinical Skills in Dysphagia has been created specifically for clinical educators supervising students and newly-qualified therapists on placements that have a focus on dysphagia. I reviewed the book (Bulletin, August 2012) alongside the companion workbook and my advice would be: don't carry out a dysphgia placement without these resources. A wide range of people working in dysphagia will find that different parts of this book offer all sorts of nuggets. It is wide ranging, covering paediatric, adult acquired and adult learning disability client groups.

There are chapters offering practical advice into making dysphagia placements work in a variety of contexts. Some excellent sections are around the practicalities of case note and report writing. The questions to stimulate discussion and really probe a student's theoretical understanding are challenging, and would support a therapist to identify depth of knowledge and a true understanding of evidence-based practice.

The DVD is a fabulous way to demystify some of the processes around using thickening agents, videofluoroscopy oro-motor examination and a basic swallow screen.
